Social, Environmental and Governance Soundness
The Mphanda Nkuwa Hydropower Project Implementation Office is committed to ensure that the Mphanda Nkuwa project is implemented within the highest social and environmental sustainability standards and tools and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, namely no poverty, zero hunger, affordable and clean energy; climate action; decent work and economic growth; industry, innovation and infrastructure; partnerships for the goals.
This certification system is internationally recognized by the International Hydroelectricity Association, multilateral banks, equipment manufacturers, non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations (Governance Committee);
The Terms Of Reference’s of ESIA were peer reviewed by relevant international organizations: African Development Bank, World Bank, International Finance Cooperation, International Hydropower Association;
GMNK signed a Cooperation Agreement wirh the International Hydropower Association (IHA), with support from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), to ensure adequate Hydropower Environmental, Social and Governance (HESG) assessment and required certification, including training and capacity building.
Conducting training on sustainable hydroelectricity standards in Mozambique for project stakeholders, with professional certification;
Creation of a Development of a Community Development Plan with assistance of IHA and relevant Institutions;
Development of a Communication Strategic Plan dedicated to address the ESIA matters and project development.

Mphanda Nkuwa is the largest hydroelectric project under development in Mozambique. Its low energy production costs are expected to be among the lowest in the region, combined with relatively limited environmental and social implications.
