Mozambique has reached another milestone in the Mphanda Nkuwa hydropower project, with the start of geotechnical and geophysical studies scheduled for this month.
The three-month technical phase, led by Geomechanics PTY Ltd and Open Ground Resources, aims to assess the geological stability of the rock formations where the future dam will be built.
This development represents a decisive step toward realising one of Mozambique’s most strategic energy projects. The Mphanda Nkuwa hydropower project, located along the Zambezi River, is set to expand the country’s renewable energy matrix, supporting national growth while reinforcing the region’s capacity for clean and sustainable power generation.
As part of the preparatory activities, traditional ceremonies were conducted at the request of local communities, reflecting respect for the customs and cultural practices of the region. These took place in Chirodzi Nsanangue, Chacocoma, Nwana Ngombe (Marara District), and Luzinga Mussafa (Chiuta District). Such measures highlight the project’s commitment to community inclusion and social responsibility — principles that remain integral to its implementation.
In parallel, installation work for the project camp and logistical support systems is progressing, ensuring operational readiness for the studies. A phased compensation process has also begun for families whose farmland will be affected, underscoring the project’s effort to balance technical advancement with social equity.
Beyond its technical significance, the Mphanda Nkuwa hydropower project is creating tangible benefits for local communities. At least forty local residents will be employed during the course of the studies, reflecting the project’s strong local content policy and its intention to stimulate economic activity in the surrounding areas.
Should the works proceed as expected, the study period may extend by an additional month to accommodate evolving technical requirements. Every stage of progress adds clarity to the project’s long-term vision: transforming Mozambique into a regional energy powerhouse through clean, renewable, and inclusive development.
The Mphanda Nkuwa hydropower project symbolises more than infrastructure; it embodies the nation’s broader ambition to achieve energy security and sustainable growth. As demand for electricity rises across southern Africa, Mozambique’s ability to generate surplus clean power positions it as a future exporter of renewable energy — a key element in fostering resilience and regional integration.
