Electricidade de Moçambique, E.P. (EDM) and the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project Implementation Office (GMNK) have signed a cooperation agreement for the “On Grid” electrification of communities affected by the Mphanda Nkuwa Project, as part of a broader community development initiative.
The protocol was signed on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, during the 10th Coordinating Council of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME), held in Macaneta, Maputo province. It aims to expand the National Electricity Grid, increase access to electricity in rural areas, promote socioeconomic development, reduce energy inequality, and accelerate the achievement of Universal Access to Electricity by 2030.
According to the protocol, approximately 1,217 families in the districts of Marara, Chiúte, and Cahora Bassa, in Tete Province, will benefit from the project.
The agreement stipulates that EDM will support the implementation of electrification projects in neighbourhoods eligible for electrification, ensuring both efficiency and sustainability. EDM will share the technical and procurement models standardised under the ProEnergia programme to reduce unit electrification costs in the affected areas. It will also provide technical and financial assistance for electrification, including logistics during implementation.
In turn, GMNK will facilitate access to areas covered by the Mphanda Nkuwa Project for the implementation of the electrification works, provide relevant project-related information, and coordinate with other entities involved to ensure integration of the electrification components.
