Mozambique’s Ambassador-designate to Japan, Alberto Paulo, recently paid an official visit to the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project Implementation Office (GMNK), underscoring the strategic importance of the energy megaproject for the country’s development.
Hosted by Carlos Yum, Director General of GMNK, the ambassador received a comprehensive presentation on the current progress of the project, including its long-term goals and the expected social, economic, and environmental impacts. The presentation highlighted how Mphanda Nkuwa is poised to play a transformative role in bolstering Mozambique’s clean energy production and establishing the nation as a regional energy hub.
Ambassador Paulo expressed his admiration for the professionalism and transparency of the project, stating, “It was a great honour and a pleasure to witness first-hand the development of such a strategic initiative for our country.”
He praised the project’s credibility, its alignment with sustainability goals, and the direct involvement of local communities and youth—elements he believes are crucial to ensuring long-term success. “Always count on our participation, unconditionally,” the ambassador added, reiterating the full support of the Mozambican Embassy in Japan.
The Mphanda Nkuwa Hydropower Project is one of the most ambitious energy infrastructure ventures in Southern Africa. Once completed, it will significantly expand Mozambique’s electricity generation capacity through renewable energy, contributing not only to national electrification but also to regional power exports under the Southern African Power Pool.
The visit marks a reinforcement of diplomatic support and international engagement in Mozambique’s energy future, and it opens the door for greater cooperation between Mozambique and Japan in the field of sustainable energy development.
