Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric
Mphanda Nkuwa Hydropower Project includes the development of a dam, that will be located on the Zambezi river, in the province of Tete, in the nort west of Mozambique, 61 km downstream of Cahora Bassa Hydro power, and 60 km from the city of Tete and 1,500 km from Maputo. A hydropower station and long-distance high voltage transmission lines from the project site to Maputo. It is a run-of-river hydroelectric power plant, with 1,500 MW capacity. The transmission system part of Mphanda Nkuwa Project encompasses a 1,300 Km high voltage transmission line connecting Tete to Maputo.
The strategic partner is expected to hold a majority share with the Government of Mozambique owning a minority share through its national utility company (EDM) and the Cahora Bassa operating company (HCB) who will bring additional implementation and operation experience to the project.
The CAPEX for generation and transmission infrastructure is expected to total around USD 4.5 billion.

Mphanda Nkuwa is the largest hydroelectric project under development in Mozambique. Its low energy production costs are expected to be among the lowest in the region, combined with relatively limited environmental and social implications.
